Public uproar over the needless deaths has placed responsibility at the rapper's feet - and at those of police officers who failed to intervene and shut the show down. How did Scott's signature "raging" spill over into a mass casualty event? Bringin' it Backwards

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gavin Turek over Zoom video! Gavin Turek has been a celebrated musician for years both for her "endlessly groovy and gripping" (NME) recorded work and spirited live performances (often featuring choreography she learned from her time spent in Ghana), and today finds the much anticipated release of her debut full-length album, 'Madame Gold' on her own Madame Gold Records.'Madame Gold', is a stunning debut album that represents Gavin's personal alter-ego who she sought strength in to overcome her inner saboteur. After bouts of self-doubt, discouragement from the music industry, and feelings of helplessness amidst the numerous global crises of the last year, Gavin entered the studio to complete the much-anticipated project and ended up creating a true powerhouse tour de force of modern R&B.Sonically the album trades the starlit disco vibes of her earlier work for an irresistible groove-heavy, R&B foundation. Tapping into the power that comes from vulnerability and taking inspiration from badass divas like Grace Jones and Diana Ross, 70s soul icons like Curtis Mayfield and the Isley Brothers, and modern day pioneers like Tame Impala and Raphael Saadiq, Gavin's sound is an honorable throwback to the past while also undeniably fresh and current in the modern music world. The more contemplative moments on the album capture a completely different side of the songwriter. "We took a more experimental route while creating the hybrid of soul and pop I'm known for, in order capture the inner transformation that was happening in me. I didn't want to repeat what I did before," said Gavin about the sonic direction of the album.NY Magazine's The Cut said the LP (produced and co-written by Childish Gambino collaborator Chris Hartz) is "sure to be a summer staple", while BUST called Turek "not only magical but a woman with integrity and heart." Early singles "Illusions" and "Slide" (feat. bLAck pARty) garnered praise from Stereogum who praised the former as a "blissed-out love song", and KCRW who called the latter "a perfect fit for your weekend on the boardwalk, or late-nite cruising down the boulevard." Also out today is the music film accompaniment for "Hero", which Gavin says "tells the origin story of my alter ego Madame Gold, through a cinematic lens. At the height of the pandemic, I found myself depleted and discouraged, unsure how to move forward. One fateful day, I tuned in for an "artist talk" given by one of my favorite visual artists, Renee Cox. Her work and encouraging words were exactly what I needed to be reminded of who I was: a hero. Conceptually and creatively directed by myself and brilliantly directed by Josh Sondock, the HERO music film is meant to inspire people, especially women who feel lost and out of touch with their personal strength, to become their own heroes and save themselves instead of waiting for someone else."Through the writing sessions for the album, Gavin exorcised deep feelings of personal pain, confusion, loss, love, moments of magic, and pressure. The result is an eclectic, pristine, and cathartic unveiling of an artist truly coming into her own -- be it on "Whisper" (a futuristic take on personal faith that includes a heartwarming interview snippet with Gavin's mother), "Hero" (a certifiable bop about leaning into your own personal strength), or "Elevator" (which Refinery29 called the "perfect soundtrack for a fresh start").According to NPR, "one way or another, Gavin Turek is going to entertain you", whether through her live performances or her music. You may have heard of Gavin in the past through her entrancing solo work, acclaimed collaborations with TOKiMONSTA, her performance on CONAN, or performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Tuxedo, Mayer Hawthorne, and Cee Lo respectively. From growing up with a father who played piano and tagging alongside her mother who toured coffeeshops singing gospel, to studying dance in Ghana, to cutting her teeth as a working musician in Los Angeles, performing has been in the forefront of Gavin's mind for her entire life, and with 'Madame Gold' the future is looking nothing but bright. We want to hear from you! Twenty Summers

Twenty Summers presents Mal Blum LIVE at Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod, Truro, MA, August 14, 2021 -- Mal Blum, once dubbed "punk's greatest hidden treasure" by Stereogum, cleverly crafted songs that are are as self-effacing as they are viscerally relatable. In 2019 they released their latest full length, Pity Boy (Don Giovanni), an album that explores boundary setting and self-sabotage, and an exemplification of Mal's ability to interrogate the human condition with lyrical ingenuity. Following that, they released a 7", Nobody Waits b/w San Cristóbal, with Saddle Creek Records' Document Series in 2020.

All Of It

«I've always liked sad music just because it's easy to be happy,» sagt Faye Webster und glänzt damit auch auf dem 4. Bringin' it Backwards

We had the pleasure of interviewing Tim Kasher of Cursive from The Casbah in San Diego CA ** This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic ** Get Fixed ripples with the visceral intensity and keen, unexpected melodicism for which Cursive has long been celebrated, as illustrated in searing first single "Barricades;" the alternately pummeling and anthemic "Black Hole Town;" and the more atmospheric, moody "Marigolds." While the album was largely born out of the same sessions as Vitriola with founding drummer Clint Schnase, "Stranded Satellite" and "Black Hole Town" were recorded this year and feature touring drummer Pat Oakes. "We're quite proud of the work we've done on both Vitriola and Get Fixed," explains singer/guitarist Tim Kasher in a letter describing the genesis of the new album. "In certain ways, they may forever be considered companion pieces, but Get Fixed feels as though it's been emancipated from the Vitriola session: the extra care and attention it received has helped it develop an identity very much its own. These songs of anger, frustration, helplessness and loss feel more poignant to us now than even a year ago — we're thrilled to finally introduce them to our world." The follow-up to the band's acclaimed Vitriola—which earned high praise from NPR Music, Noisey, Stereogum, Pitchfork, SPIN, Paste, NYLON, FLOOD, The Talkhouse, and Under the Radar, among many others—Get Fixed is now available via 15 Passenger. Burning Ambulance Podcast

Episode 63 of the Burning Ambulance Podcast features an interview with Seth Rosner and Yulun Wang of Pi Recordings. As you probably know by now, a typical episode is based around an interview with an artist. But Pi Recordings is such an important label when it comes to the kind of music covered on Burning Ambulance – I mean, Roscoe Mitchell, who's released music on Pi both as a solo artist and with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, was the first ever guest on this show – that I thought it was important and worthwhile to have these guys on to discuss 20 years of the label.I've been listening to their releases pretty much since the beginning – the first titles I heard were The Year of the Elephant, by Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet, and Organic Resonance, a live duo album by Wadada and Anthony Braxton, and The Meeting, a reunion album by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. I was at one of the Art Ensemble's performances at the New York jazz club Iridium that was recorded for the live double CD Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City; we talk about that record a little bit in the show. I haven't heard every record they've put out, but I've heard at least half of them, and I've written about a ton of them for Bandcamp Daily, for Stereogum, for The Wire, for Burning Ambulance, for Jazziz, and probably other places as well. And I've known Seth and Yulun personally for years. I've run into them at the Jazz Gallery or at the Vision Festival or in record stores, and we've always gotten along and I've always enjoyed talking to them, and I think that feeling comes through in this conversation. We talk about a lot of different things relating to the label in this interview. We start from the beginning, but it's as much about philosophy as history – they talk about why they do what they do, the kind of music they're choosing to support and promote with their releases, and what it says about the culture that their highly specific niche within the world of jazz has been so well received by critics and the public, and that so many of their artists have received major awards. I mean, Henry Threadgill is a Pulitzer Prize winner and an NEA jazz master. Roscoe Mitchell is an NEA jazz master. Vijay Iyer is a MacArthur fellow. Tyshawn Sorey is a MacArthur fellow. Wadada Leo Smith was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Pi releases routinely land at the top of jazz critics' polls, every single year. Anybody looking at the landscape would have to say that if there's any kind of debate about the status of traditional versus so-called avant-garde jazz, the avant-garde guys have won. But it's still a business, and the music business is tough, tougher than ever, honestly. So we talk about the realities of what it's meant to run a small independent label and how they've managed to keep it going for 20 years, too.If you enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. Toxic Schlock

We bring our slasher series to a close with a deep dive into the film that redefined and resurrected the genre, Wes Craven's 1996 blockbuster "SCREAM". We explore the career of Craven, his continuous impact on the genre for 3 decades in a row, and the path to his 90s masterpiece . We're then joined by Tom Breihan (Stereogum, Av Club) to discuss the film's stacked cast, the John Hughes-esque writing of Kevin Williamson, the sad state of slasher cinema in the early 1990s, and how SCREAM's meta horror approach redefined the genre for a new generation. Our good friend Irene, otherwise known as the Black Metal Pastry Chef on the interwebs, is joining us for this chapter of the Diary, talking about seeing Blood Incantation on Valentine's Day (the cipher was featured in a Stereogum article about it, read it here, and yes, he totally keeps saying Kerrang), blasting Cloud Rat to wake up in the AM, navigating the hostile territory of the power violence scene, dropping out of university to fall into a career as a pastry chef, the science of baking, her favorite bakes, why the cake apple/pie debate is dumb, weed treats and Sunn O))) peanut butter tarts, why baking to music is a must, heavy metal getting cute, and Morbid Angel Food Cake. Also featuring a guest appearance throughout by a man aggressively trying to back his car out of a snowbank.Follow Irene on Instagram

What lYric

This week I did another album review on The White Stripes' album Elephant. It was a fun episode to record and has one of my favorite songs ever in it as the Y. The beat to the song is so well known it became a sports chant. Additionally, I go over Black Math and Ball and Biscuit plus two more songs. Let me know your answers to this week's podcast questions by sending me a message on Instagram at Jd4unc. If you haven't yet go check out season 5 episode 2 with special guest Evan Statile. Thanks for listening, leave a like, a review, and share with a friend. Discovering Jazz

Today I play a few tracks from records that Scott Yanow, Downbeat Magazine, CBC, Stereogum, and Bandcamp say are among 2020's best. The range of styles is pretty extreme! From the most basic New orleans style jazz to what youtube classifies as dance/electonic. The highlights for me are 12 minutes of a recently discovered Thelonious…Continue reading Episode 132: Best of 2020 Part 2

All Of It

Besides reigning Christmas queen Mariah Carey, most artists' efforts break into the Christmas canon have fallen short. And there have been many efforts. Even before Halloween this year, we saw new, unseasonably seasonal releases from Dolly Parton, Andrew Bird, JoJo, and many more artists. Stereogum senior news editor Chris Deville joins for our ongoing "Review/Preview" series to talk about some of the new Christmas albums worth checking out for this holiday season.

This episode I am joined by music journalist Joseph Schafer. Schafer has written for Bandcamp, Decibel Magazine, Stereogum and many more publications. He also helps organize Northwest Terror Fest, an extreme metal based in Seattle Washington. The two of us go way back, so our conversation rambled through a lot of topics including Schafer's path into music criticism, his approach to running a fest, and what the metal scene can learn from Paradise Lost. Jazz Bastard Podcast

This is a strange one, listeners, as the boys compare and contrast various jazz "best-of" lists for the 2010's and then let you, the listener, "behind the curtain" as they decide how to populate the next four shows of the podcast. Mike's rubric: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Having already discussed 250 (count 'em) albums from the 2010's, can our intrepid podcasters find a "Kind of Blue Killer" from the last decade? And will any of us be around for episode 300? Tune in to find out. (Pop matters touches on Sly Stone, Badfinger, Daryl Hall, and Captain Beefheart.)

Cutter's RockCast

You know who Brent Smith is if you listen to rock music, unless you write for Stereogum but more on that in this the 199th actual episode of Cutter's Rockcast. Shinedown are close to breaking the record for the most number one rock songs in history and they may do it with a song that was put out to solely raise money for Direct Relief. There's a lot to cover here with Mr. Smith.

Bops & Flops

Harrison Simon returns for the long overdue first pop roundup of 2020. It's been a wild few weeks for pop fans, and we react to the "Rain On Me" event single; new singles from Chloe x Halle, Bree Runway and Yung Baby Tate; the Savage vs. Say So superstar remix chart race; Twitter being mad at Lana del Rey and Doja Cat; and much much more. Plus, the balms of new Carly Rae Jepsen and Charli XCX albums. And we celebrate ten years of Sleigh Bells Treats, inspired by the Stereogum article by James Rettig.

100 gecs is a duo, made up of Laura Les and Dylan Brady. In 2016, they put out an EP called 100 gecs, and three years later, they released their first album, called 1000 gecs. It was named the Best Album of 2019 in Vice and in The New York Times. It was also on year-end lists in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum and more. Dylan lives in Los Angeles, and Laura in Chicago—they work remotely, sending files back and forth to each other. In this episode, the two of them break down how they made the song "Money Machine." songexploder.net/100-gecs

Sound Audits

Released in September of 2018, Mother of My Children was the debut album from Black Belt Eagle Scout, the recording project of Katherine Paul. Heralded as a favorite new musician of 2018 by the likes of NPR Music, Stereogum, and Paste, the album was also named as a "Best Rock Album of 2018" by Pitchfork, and garnered further end-of-year praise from FADER, Under The Radar and more. Arriving just a year after that debut record, At the Party With My Brown Friends is a brand new full-length recording from Black Belt Eagle Scout. Where that first record was a snapshot of loss and landscape and of KP's standing as a radical indigenous queer feminist, this new chapter finds its power in love, desire and friendship. At the Party With My Brown Friends is a profound and understated forward step. The squalling guitar anthems that shaped its predecessor are replaced by delicate vocals and soft keys, sentiments spoken and unspoken, presenting something shadowy and unsettling; a stirring of the waters. The end result presents a captivating about-face that redefines KP's beautifully singular artistic vision. At the Party With My Brown Friends is introduced in greater detail here via a new statement by the artist.

Sidewalk Talk Show

Within two short years, music quite literally carried 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and artist Noah Kahan around the world—a long way from his native Strafford, VT (pop. 1,045) and the 133-acre tree farm where he resides. On the trip, the alternative troubadour notched an international hit in the form of "Hurt Somebody" [feat. Julia Michaels], which tallied 200 million-plus streams in the span of a year, went triple-platinum in Australia and gold in six other countries, and was the third most played song on Australian Top 40 radio in all of 2018. Additionally, he performed the single on Late Night with Stephen Colbert during his late-night television debut. As Noah steadily averaged over 6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, his songs "Young Blood" and "False Confidence" racked up millions of streams and he sold out tours in North America, Europe, and the UK. Not to mention, he garnered acclaim from Billboard, Stereogum, Clash, Idolator, and more. In the midst of this whirlwind, he assembled his highly anticipated upcoming debut album. The first single "Mess" illuminates his marked growth as a songwriter and storyteller by way of its biting lyrics and undeniable sing-a-long. The song underscores a heartwarming and often hilarious portrait of hometown longing.Follow Sidewalk Talk:https://twitter.com/sidewalktalkshw (all updates)https://instagram.com/sidewalktalkpop See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Diva Behavior

Is Courtney Love misunderstood? Probably not, she seems like an open book. She's definitely controversial, though, thanks to her history of drug addiction, drama, feuds... oh, and of course those pesky conspiracy theories. But most of all, she's been painted as a difficult she-devil due to society's discomfort with any woman who's outspoken and talented and refuses to conform. We're joined by music critic Keely Quinlan (@keelyquinlann), a writer for Consequence of Sound, Stereogum and more. She fills us in on the context of the Pacific Northwest grunge and Riot Grrrl scenes that helped give birth to Courtney's antihero status. She also wrote the "Diva Behavior" theme song, fun fact!
