image

Unsurprisingly, Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XIII has been a huge hit in its pure Japan, selling 1.5 million copies in its prime calendar week – and putting the game in the hands of tierce of entirely Japanese PS3 owners.

If there was anyone in our audience who was frankly non expecting Final Fantasy Long dozen to do well, rear your hand. Now lower your hand and (with aforesaid hand) slap yourself crossways the face for being a poop. As the first proper Last Fantasy in almost 5 days, the game was unsurprisingly an instant hit (united might even say, a lightning smasher) when IT launched last week in Japan, and uber-game-magazine Famitsu confirmed a weekly sales figure of 1,516,532 units for the crippled's establish.

That's a goodly numerate, to exist sure – but it's symmetrical more considerable when you figure that this was for the week ending on December 20th, and FF13 came knocked out on the 17th – thus that International Relations and Security Network't even a fully week of sales, and in the smaller Japanese grocery store no fewer.

But that International Relations and Security Network't even the most impressive number here: Another Famitsu report claims that Final examination Fantasy XIII caused a spike in PS3 sales, with the console moving 250,000 units together with the game's launch (that's to a higher degree the ear that accompanied the release of the PS3 Slim, by the way). Given that Sony announced that the PS3 had topped 4 million consoles oversubscribed in Japan barely last week, Army of the Righteou's assume that all of these PS3s are in the hands of unique individuals and that there's a total install lowly of 4,250,000 Japanese PS3 owners. Many quick maths gives us a Final Fantasy XIII attach rate of 35%.

In other words, a third of all Japanese PS3 owners bought Unalterable Fantasy XIII in to a lesser extent than a week. That's a staggering attach rate, and one that most games would be incredibly lucky to ever achieve.

To be fair, the gritty is unlikely to sell that many another Sir Thomas More copies after its first calendar week, as raw software (that isn't on the Wii) all but always faces a clifflike slump, but that's still a same, very strong performance from Square-Enix. Discuss Greased Lightning, huh?

Mmm, lubricated Lightning…
